PGE Arena Stadium in Gdańsk – the steel roof structure has been lowered into position
On 14 November 2010, after the completion and acceptance of assembly and welding works, the construction team proceeded to separate the steel roof structure from its supporting beam. Energomontaż - Południe S.A has thus completed the most important stage in the construction of the stadium roof.
First, the steel structure was separated from the reinforced-concrete crown beam of the stadium. In the final stage of the lowering operation, hydraulic slave cylinders were used to completely disconnect the steel roof structure from the supporting beam. The roof was lowered down sequentially in 50mm steps until it was completely released. The above process was continuously monitored with geodesic measurements. The lowered roof, which weighs more than 6500 tonnes, became a self-supporting structure. The operation was progressing smoothly, in accordance with the pre-prepared schedule (it took nearly 6 days to separate the structure).

The self-supporting structure now carries its own weight. It is one of the most difficult constructions of this type in Poland. The assembly work has lasted since April 2010 - during that time, all construction elements of the huge girders were delivered to the construction site (each of the 82 frames weighs 66 tonnes). They were assembled in two stages: with the vertical facade part being constructed first, followed by the horizontal roof part.
