Vintage Boats and Yachts in Gdańsk – an event sponsored by EP

On 27-29 August 2010 the Fourth Rally of Vintage Boats and Yachts took place in Gdańsk Marina. This meeting of vintage boat and yacht enthusiasts from all over the world was organised by the City of Gdańsk, the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre in Gdańsk and Captain Jerzy Wąsowicz, the founder of the event. The main sponsor was Energomontaż-Południe S.A.

The rally drew in nearly 200 sailors from 33 crews with their old vessels. Not only Polish, but also foreign craft took part in the event, including British (Phoebe), Scottish (Incentive), Danish (Mareas) participants and Lithuanians from the beautiful tall ship Brabander.

Thanks to the favourable weather, the attractive location and above all the wonderful tall ships, Gdańsk Marina was packed with visitors, both locals and tourists, interested in the history of these beautiful vessels. All over the marina's quays you could hear colourful tales being told by vintage boat owners, listened to raptly by "landlubbers". Children excitedly explored every nook and cranny of the visiting craft. There were also lessons on how to tie seaman's knots and for keen readers there was a stand selling nautical publications. An additional attraction of the rally were vintage cars. Everyone wanted to have their picture taken with the well-known Syrena or Black Volga, remembered by many as a symbol of childhood fear.

This year's rally also featured the unveiling of the Gdańsk Avenue of Vintage Vessels. The committee, composed of the Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz, the Ambassador of Gdańsk for Maritime Affairs Mateusz Kusznierewicz, the Director of the Gdańsk Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre Leszek Paszkowski, the Director of the Central Maritime Museum Jerzy Litwin, the President of Gdańsk Community Foundation Andrzej Stelmasiewicz and the Captain of S/Y Antica Jerzy Wąsowicz, decided that the first vessel to be honoured with a bronze plaque would be S/Y Korsarz.

The climax of the event was a parade of yachts along the Motława river. Members of the public filled every inch of the Long Wharf in Gdańsk and bid farewell to the participants in the Fourth Rally of Vintage Boats and Yachts with loud applause and enthusiastic waving, encouraging them to return to the beautiful City of Gdańsk in two years' time at the latest, i.e. for the next rally.
